Hello, Baby

You're about to welcome a bundle of joy into the world - congratulations! We love newborns and as with our other sessions, we take a candid, natural approach to these types of sessions. You won't see any posed "baby in a basket" type of shots from us (if you're interested in those types of images, we can refer you to some really amazing local photographers that specialize in studio work!). Instead of props, we try to focus more on the bond you are creating with you new baby, how big brothers and sisters might be reacting, how much love you are feeling. You can expect lots of holding and snuggling! Our newborn sessions take place in one of two locations - either in your own home within a month of birth, or in the hospital within 48 hours of birth. If you need help deciding what type of newborn session is right for you, just give us a shout and we can chat!

Tips for your session

preparation for in-home sessions

Newborn sessions tend to work best when your baby is comfortable and sleepy. We encourage you to make sure your baby is warm, dry, and has a full belly. Try to get a feeding in before the session begins, and be sure to keep your home on the warmer side. If breaks are needed to feed or change the baby, that's totally okay! We realize that little ones operate on their own schedule in the early weeks/months of life, and are fully prepared to hang out when he or she needs to eat. Being parents ourselves, we also understand what an exhausting blur those first few weeks are. If needed, we suggest enlisting help from friends or family members to help tidy up the house, so the environment feels fresh and clean with minimal distractions. If this isn't possible, not to worry. We can work around a bit of clutter ;)

What to wear

For the parents: Since our newborn mostly sessions take place inside the home, it's important to wear clothing that fits in a home environment. Items that are super dressy might not look right for an in-home session. We suggest wearing something a little more on the casual side that's comfortable enough for snuggling with your little guy or gal. Neutral colors are also a great idea - busy patterns can take attention away from the baby, and bright colors can cast odd colors onto his or her delicate skin.

For the baby: Simplicity is key. We want the baby to be the main focus of the images, as opposed to the clothing. Well-fitting onesies and swaddling blankets are great! Tiny newborns tend to swim in bulky or busy clothing. We want to avoid anything that might ride up around the baby's chin and take attention away from his or her sweet features! Plain diaper covers are also excellent if you want some shots of your baby sans-clothing. For baby girls, if headbands are a must, we encourage sticking to items that are on the smaller side. Huge headbands can cast odd shadows and distract from your baby's face. In general, neutral colors and simple patterns are what we love most when it comes to clothing!
