In-home vs. on-location sessions: choosing what feels right for your family
When planning a family session, one of the first decisions you’ll make is where it will take place. In your home, or somewhere out in the world. There isn’t a right or wrong choice here, just different ways of telling your story.
Each option holds something a little different. The goal isn’t to choose what looks best on paper, but what will feel the most like you when you’re in it.
IN-HOME SESSIONS
In-home sessions are quiet in a way that’s hard to recreate anywhere else.
They take place in the spaces your family already knows - the living room floor where toys tend to gather, the kitchen where you move through your routines, the bedroom where the day begins and ends. There’s nothing new to figure out, and because of that everyone tends to settle in more quickly. This is especially true for families with young children. They can move freely, reach for the things they love, and stay close when they need to. There’s a natural rhythm already built into your space, and we simply step into it.
In-home sessions often feel slower and more intimate. The moments are smaller, but they carry weight and result in images that feel deeply personal. Not just because of who is in them, but because of where they’re happening.
ON-LOCATION SESSIONS
On-location sessions bring a different kind of energy. There’s more movement, openness, and space to explore. If you’re drawn to scenic backdrops - open fields, tree lines, water, or even the texture of a city - this might feel like the right fit. For kids who love to run, climb, and move constantly, outdoor spaces can be a natural outlet. They don’t need to be contained, and that freedom often leads to playful, expressive moments.
Parks, in particular, tend to work well for high-energy families. There’s room to spread out, to move without restriction, to let things unfold a little more freely.
Urban locations offer something different. They bring in structure through lines, textures, architecture, and can add a layer of visual interest. Some families are drawn to that contrast: the softness of interaction against a more defined backdrop.
WHAT IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO
The biggest difference isn’t just the setting. It’s the feeling of the session.
In-home sessions tend to be more grounded, intimate, and reflective of your everyday life, where on-location sessions tend to be more expansive, movement-driven, and visually shaped by the environment.
Neither is better, just different ways of holding the same thing: your family, as you are, in this season.
