Why your kids don’t need to behave for family photos

There are a variety of elements that can come together to make an image or a photo session successful, and believe it or not, not one of them is “good” behavior from children.

Your kids don’t need to behave for your photo session to be a success. They don’t need to sit still or smile on command. They don’t need to be anything other than exactly who they are right now. Because the truth is, the way they are right now is the whole point.

The way your toddler runs instead of walks. The way your child hides behind your leg before peeking out again. The way they want to be held, or tossed in the air, or pick flowers, or explore. That’s not something to fix. That’s something to document.

When we let go of the idea that kids need to “perform,” something shifts. The pressure disappears. And suddenly, we’re not trying to get through a session - we’re just…in it.

I’ll gently guide you when needed, but I’m not looking for perfect behavior - I’m looking for connection. A hand reaching for yours. A belly laugh. The way you instinctively pull them closer. Those are the moments that last.

Years from now, you won’t remember whether they followed directions. You’ll remember what it felt like to be with them in that season. And that’s exactly what we’re preserving.
